Ever since there were companies, there have been managers trying to work out who they should hire or fire. With the advent of big data, there has been a radical technocratic shift that is letting apps do the hard work for you. Since then, big-data algorithms have revolutionised the tech industry, and there are now dedicated teams in Google, Intel, General Motors, and HP. Big data offers a fascinating window into staff’s professional lives. From their heart rate to mouse clicks, HR can analyse an employee’s performance and thus get a better understanding of their capability and behaviour. Employee monitoring can manifest in different forms, with health being an obvious place to start. Big data is monitoring you In 2015, the US retail chain Target offered Fitbit trackers to its 350, 000 workers as part of its corporate wellness programme. The company offered them a $60 Zip and in return they will get access to their activity data, such as the number of steps taken in a day, but workers must agree to opt-in first. If they choose not to take part, then they’ll lose company health incentives and potentially have higher health care premiums as a result. Other apps are arguably more intrusive. For example, Worksnaps, monitors an employee at their desk by taking screenshots, counting mouse-clicks and webcam photos. BetterWorks meanwhile nudges employees to use a Facebook-style application that encourages staff to share what they are doing and cheering on their peers when they perform well. There is nowhere to hide when you are subject to mouse-clicking and gamification apps. Everybody will know what you have done, how long it took you and how fast you are doing it. Data screening candidates Since the mid-twentieth century, there has been multiple tests applied to candidates applying for new jobs. IQ tests, maths and vocabulary tests, personality assessments, and health and safety examinations, are still used by companies recruiting today. When people analytics goes mainstream it’s going to take recruitment testing to another level. As ever, the technological revolution is taking place in Silicon Valley with video-based apps such as Knack. Their smartphone games are designed by neuroscientists, psychologists, and data scientists to measure human potential. Play one of their problem solving games and they will analyse how long you hesitate; the sequences you make before taking a decision; how you solve problems, and many more outcomes. By analysing your creativity, aptitude and social intelligence, the Knack app is a data-driven window into a candidate’s soul. Are you an innovator? A leader or a follower? People analytics reveal more about a new hire than an interview ever will. Offering companies an efficient and timely resource, data-driven apps are proving to be more effective than screening candidates who say the right things, but aren’t necessarily right for the role. Many companies are now using algorithms to improve their hiring and retention policies and performance levels. As the tech industry continues to push big data, a joined-up approach combining traditional interviews and people analytics is inevitable. Like all good managers, recruiters will have to work smarter not harder to find the right candidates in the future.

7 Ways Im Playing Bigger in 2019 It’s a new year. If you listened to my 2019 goals podcast, you know that I am very focused this year. I have a clear head. I’m not pregnant! Haha. It feels great to have a fresh start. I’m feeling more like myself and ready to play big and reach more of my dreams and goals this year. Here’s the  podcast episode if you want to listen to it. She said,  You are a Big Deal. Do you think Oprah thinks she is a big deal? Yes. Do you think Elizabeth Gilbert and Brene Brown think they are a big deal? Yes. She gave me permission to be a big deal when I know I’m like her and have been hiding for a bit. Ive been just watching others become big deals. It really helped me examine how I needed to show up in 2019 and the limiting beliefs that were holding me back. So, here is what I how I am aiming for bigger things this coming year. 1) Waking up before my kids. I’ve gotten lazy. My nights are hard. My daughter is still waking up at night nursing. I’m missing my morning times. I’m a better mom with a little alone time before they wake up. 2) Making health a priority. Gym and eating. Workout classes. Eating with my daughter. I need to show up healthy and strong in order to reach my professional and mama goals. 3) Limiting social media distractions.  I read Deep Work by Cal Newport, and it really inspired me. I am going to stop constantly checking the phone and unplug periodically. 4) Trying to get more done by the 15th of the month. Scheduling in focus time. I am going to schedule in hotel staycations to focus. 5) Reward myself if I reach a goal at end of the month.  This really helps motivate me. 6) More reading for fun and personal development. Nighttime shutdown routine. Putting the phone away. 7) Be who I know I can be. Act like I am the person achieving my goals. Don’t be afraid to network with the people I need to network with. Surround myself with people who are doing what I want to do someday. Not sure how, but I am open to it this year. Normally I say no to opportunities. I still don’t want to travel much with my daughters, so I’m not completely all in on this one yet but I know I need to surround myself with big thinkers and other entrepreneurs who are doing similar things. Before we go, one last thing: You can totally do this. Yes, you can! It’s all about putting the right habits in place and making daily baby steps! You got this!

The Three Most Important Words It may seem unlikely that three simple words are all you need. But, let me explain. I recently went to an event where author and speaker Jon Acuff covered a lot of topics from his book “Do Over” and these three words caught my attention. He covered much more in the 20 minutes or so that he was on stage, but these three words really resonated and got me thinking. The Three Words are: Apparently, I can! Why Just Three Words? There is a little bit of magic in the these three words. Because they can be spoken (or written) after almost any you think you can question. Especially when the question is thrown at you in an incredulous manner. In these cases these three (magical) words can be stated very matter of factly or somewhat fancifully and should always be delivered with a wry smile. The Three Words are: Apparently, I can! Putting The Three Words to Use If someone asks you a question that may be a bit rhetorical or even perhaps a bit condescending you can reply with these three simple words. For example, if someone asks: You think you can start a business? You think you can ship that product this year? You think you can run a marathon in under 4 hours? Changing Jobs, Changing Careers, Changing Industries Change is something we tend to avoid like the plague (or perhaps more timely, Swine Flu). Yet job seekers right now willhave to investigate something different. The job you had before doesnt exist any longer. There were unique sets of circumstances that led to the evolution of your last job and in many cases the employer worked around your strengths and weaknesses to allow the job to suit you. This time, you will want to position your skills into a job defined by the employer. So my advice, stop looking for what you used to do and focus on what you want to do. There are millions of opportunities out there, really. The likelihood of your finding the right one for you or even just a job, requires that you fit your skills into their round hole. If you focus on the skills you most like using, you will be far more successful in finding someone who can use them. Think outside your previous job title, career and industry. Thinking outside the box can be difficult. You will most likely need some help. Enlist the advice ofthose you trust. There was a great posting on Life at work about change.
